GST Calculator (India)
Updated · By the CalculatorDash editorial team · How we check our maths
Quick answer
To add GST, multiply the price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). To remove GST from an inclusive price, divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100). Since GST 2.0 took effect on 22 September 2025 the main slabs are 5%, 18% and 40%, with 0% for exempt items and 3% for gold and jewellery.
How this calculator works
India's Goods and Services Tax is charged on most supplies of goods and services. For a sale within one state, the tax is split equally between central GST (CGST) and state GST (SGST, or UTGST in union territories). For a sale between states, the whole amount is integrated GST (IGST).
The GST 2.0 reform, effective 22 September 2025, merged the old 12% and 28% slabs into a simpler structure: 5% for essentials and many mass-use goods, 18% as the standard rate for most goods and services (including IT and SaaS), and 40% for luxury and sin goods. Special rates of 3% (gold, silver, jewellery) and 0.25% (rough diamonds) continue.
The formula
- Add GST
- GST = amount × rate ÷ 100; total = amount + GST
- Remove GST
- net = inclusive amount ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); GST = inclusive amount − net
- Split
- CGST = SGST = GST ÷ 2 within a state; IGST = GST between states
Worked example
A design agency invoices ₹50,000 for services at 18% to a client in the same state. GST is ₹9,000, split into ₹4,500 CGST and ₹4,500 SGST, and the invoice total is ₹59,000. If the client is in another state, the ₹9,000 is charged as IGST.
Tips
- 01Printed MRPs in India include GST; use 'remove GST' to find the taxable value.
- 02Keep a copy of every purchase invoice to claim input tax credit.
- 03Rates depend on the exact HSN or SAC code; confirm before invoicing a new item.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GST from a total amount?
Divide the GST-inclusive amount by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to get the taxable value, then subtract it from the total. For ₹1,180 at 18%, the taxable value is ₹1,000 and GST is ₹180.
What are the current GST slabs?
Following GST 2.0 (effective 22 September 2025), the main slabs are 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%, with special rates of 3% on gold, silver and jewellery and 0.25% on rough diamonds.
What is the GST rate on software and SaaS?
Software, IT and online information services are generally taxed at 18%.
When is IGST charged instead of CGST and SGST?
IGST applies to inter-state supplies and imports. CGST and SGST apply when the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state.
