Local Moving Cost Calculator
Updated · By the CalculatorDash editorial team · How we check our maths
Quick answer
Local movers usually charge per mover per hour, often around $50–$100 per mover, with a two- to four-hour minimum. A two-bedroom local move with a three-person crew commonly comes to roughly $800–$1,500 including travel time. Stairs, long carries and packing add hours.
How this calculator works
Local moves are billed by time: the number of movers, multiplied by the hourly rate, multiplied by the hours on the clock. Most companies also bill travel time between their yard and your home, and almost all have a minimum booking of two to four hours.
A bigger crew costs more per hour but usually finishes faster, so the total does not grow as much as the hourly rate suggests. This calculator starts from typical crew-hours for each home size, divides by the crew you choose, then adds travel and applies the minimum.
The formula
- Work hours
- typical crew-hours × 3 ÷ movers × stairs factor × packing factor
- Billable hours
- the larger of (work hours + travel) and the minimum
- Labor
- billable hours × movers × rate per mover
- Total
- labor + tip
Worked example
A two-bedroom move with three movers takes about 5 hours of work. Add 1 hour of travel for 6 billable hours. At $65 per mover per hour, labor is 6 × 3 × 65 = $1,170; a 10% tip brings the total to $1,287.
Tips
- 01Ask whether travel time is billed both ways and whether the truck is included in the hourly rate.
- 02Pack and label boxes yourself to cut hours; movers are fastest with sealed, uniform boxes.
- 03Reserve parking or an elevator at both ends. Long carries can add an hour or more.
