Tip Calculator

Quick answer
Tip = bill × tip percentage. On an $86 bill, a 20% tip is $17.20, making $103.20, or $25.80 each for four people. In the US, 15–20% is standard for table service; in the UK and much of Europe 10–12.5% is common when service isn't already included.
How this calculator works
A tip is a percentage of the bill, so the only real choices are which percentage and whether to apply it to the total before or after tax. Etiquette guides in the US generally say tipping on the pre-tax amount is fine; many people simply tip on the total because it's quicker.
Customs differ widely. In the US and Canada, tips make up a large share of servers' pay, and 15–20% is expected for table service. In the UK, a 12.5% service charge is often added to the bill already. In Australia and much of Europe tipping is appreciated but smaller, and in India a 5–10% tip is common unless a service charge is listed.
Splitting evenly is the simplest way to settle a group bill. Turn on rounding if you'd rather each person pays a whole amount; the small extra goes to the tip.
The formula
- Tip
- (bill − tax) × tip %
- Total
- bill + tip
- Each person
- total ÷ number of people
Worked example
An $86 bill with a 20% tip is $17.20 in tip and $103.20 in total. Split four ways, each person pays $25.80, of which $4.30 is tip.
Tips
- 01Quick 20%: move the decimal one place left and double it. $86 → $8.60 → $17.20.
- 02Check the bill for an included service charge before adding a tip.
- 03For takeaway, delivery and counter service, smaller tips are normal in most countries.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15–20% for table service, more for excellent service. In the UK about 10–12.5% if no service charge is added.
Do you tip on the total before or after tax?
Either is acceptable; etiquette guides say the pre-tax amount is correct, but many people tip on the total.
How do I calculate a 15% tip?
Take 10% of the bill and add half of that again. On $60: $6 + $3 = $9.
