Flooring Installation Cost Calculator
Updated · Written and checked by Monu Kumar Modi · How we check our maths
Quick answer
Flooring is priced per square foot of material plus installation. Luxury vinyl plank in 500 sq ft usually costs about $3,650–$4,450 installed with 10% waste, underlayment and old floor removal. Hardwood and tile cost more; carpet and laminate cost less.
How this calculator works
A flooring quote has three parts: material, labour and preparation. Material is priced per square foot, and you always buy more than the room size to allow for cuts and mistakes. Labour depends on the material; tile and hardwood take longer to install than click-together vinyl or laminate.
Removing the old floor and laying underlayment are often listed separately. This calculator includes both as switches so the estimate matches a real quote.
Flooring businesses can hide the labour rate and show customers an instant installed price on their own site, then receive the room size and material choice as a lead.
The formula
- Material to buy
- area × (1 + waste %)
- Materials
- material to buy × (price per sq ft + $0.50 underlayment)
- Labour
- area × labour rate (× 1.4 for tile and hardwood)
- Removal
- area × $1.20 per sq ft
Worked example
500 sq ft of vinyl plank with 10% waste means ordering 550 sq ft. At $3.50 plus $0.50 underlayment that's $2,200 of materials. Labour at $2.50 is $1,250 and removal is $600, for about $4,050, or $8.10 per sq ft.
Tips
- 01Let flooring acclimatise in the room for 48 hours before installation.
- 02Keep one unopened box for future repairs; colours change between batches.
- 03Ask whether moving furniture and baseboard removal are included.
- 04Check the subfloor for squeaks and soft spots before new flooring goes down; fixing it later means lifting the floor.
