Lawn Mowing Price Calculator
Updated · By the CalculatorDash editorial team · How we check our maths
Quick answer
A typical residential mow costs about $45–$90 per visit, with a quarter-acre lot around $50–$60. Larger properties are usually priced per acre, roughly $60–$150 per acre for regular service. Overgrown grass, steep slopes and bagging clippings all push the price up.
How this calculator works
Lawn care pros price small lots per visit and larger properties per acre. This calculator does both: it multiplies lawn size by a per-acre rate, then applies your minimum so small yards still cover drive time and equipment wear.
Condition and terrain matter as much as size. An overgrown lawn needs a slower pass and often a double cut, and slopes or lots of obstacles (beds, trees, play sets) add trimming time. Edging and bagging are usually charged as add-ons because they can add a quarter of the time to a job.
The formula
- Base
- acres × rate per acre × condition multiplier × terrain multiplier
- Add-ons
- +15% for edging and trimming, +20% for bagging
- Price per cut
- the larger of the base price and your minimum
- Season
- price per cut × number of visits
Worked example
A flat half-acre lawn at $120 per acre is $60 per cut. With edging (+15%) it becomes $69. Over a 26-cut season that is $1,794, or about $299 a month while you are mowing weekly.
Tips
- 01Measure lots in a free map tool before quoting; customers often guess their lawn size wrong.
- 02Offer a lower per-cut price for prepaid seasonal contracts. It smooths cash flow and locks in the customer.
- 03Charge a one-time cleanup fee for the first visit on overgrown lawns rather than raising the recurring rate.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I charge to mow a lawn?
Most residential mows fall between about $45 and $90 per visit. Use a per-acre rate for larger properties and set a minimum so tiny lawns are still worth the trip.
How much does it cost to mow an acre?
Regular service on an open acre commonly costs $60–$150. Overgrown grass, slopes and obstacles can push it higher.
Should edging cost extra?
Many companies include basic trimming and charge extra for detailed edging along beds and paths. This calculator adds 15% when edging is turned on.
How many times a year is a lawn mowed?
In most US climates, weekly mowing from spring through early autumn works out to roughly 24–30 cuts a season. Warmer regions may need more.
