Junk Removal Price Calculator

Updated · Written and checked by · How we check our maths

Quick answer

Junk removal is usually priced by how much of a truck your items fill. A half truckload typically costs about $300–$400, a full load $550–$750. Heavy items such as mattresses, appliances or hot tubs, stairs and same-day service add to the price.

How this calculator works

Most junk removal companies price by volume: the share of their truck your items take up. That is fairer than a flat fee because a sofa and a garage clear-out take very different amounts of space, time and dump fees.

Some items cost extra because the company pays to dispose of them properly. Mattresses, fridges and freezers (which contain refrigerant), TVs and monitors, tyres and paint are the usual ones. Carrying heavy items up or down stairs takes longer, and same-day bookings are often priced higher.

For junk removal businesses, the full-load price and minimum charge are hidden settings, so the embedded calculator shows customers an honest range and passes the details on as a lead.

The formula

Load
share of a truck × full-load price (at least the minimum charge)
Extras
heavy items × 6% of a full load + 15% of the load price for stairs
Same day
× 1.2 when same-day service is chosen

Worked example

A half truck at $650 a full load is $325. One mattress adds $39. The total is $364, shown as a range of about $320–$408.

Tips

  1. 01Group everything in one place, such as a garage or driveway, to reduce labour time.
  2. 02Donate furniture in good condition first; charities often collect for free.
  3. 03Ask whether the price includes loading, sweeping up and all disposal fees.
  4. 04Book early in the week; weekend and month-end slots fill fastest and sometimes cost more.

Frequently asked questions

How much does junk removal cost?

Typically $125–$200 for a few items, $300–$400 for a half truck and $550–$750 for a full truck, depending on the area.

How big is a full junk removal truck?

Usually around 15 cubic yards, about the size of a one-car garage filled to waist height.

Is junk removal cheaper than renting a dumpster?

For a few items or a single load, usually yes, because the crew does the lifting. For a long renovation, a dumpster can be cheaper.

Why do mattresses and fridges cost extra?

They have disposal or recycling fees, and fridges must have their refrigerant removed safely.
